Thanks to their fine-tuned choreography — and even finer harmonies — The Temptations became the definitive male vocal group of the 1960s. One of Motown's most versatile acts, they tackled both lush pop and politically charged funk with equal flair, and weathered a steady stream of changes in personnel and consumer tastes with dignity and grace.
The band, formed in Detroit in 1961, saw its greatest hits starting to rise with writer/producer Smokey Robinson and "The Way You Do the Things You Do," the first in a series of 37 career Top Ten hits. In 1965, their signature song, "My Girl," became a #1 pop and R&B hit. Other Top 20 hits that year included "It's Growing," "Since I Lost My Baby," "Don't Look Back," and "My Baby." In 1966, the Temptations recorded another Robinson hit, "Get Ready." This paved the way for the sounds of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Beauty's Only Skin Deep" and "(I Know) I'm Losing You."
In 1968, ex-Contour and future Grammy-winner Dennis Edwards joined the group lending his talents to the singles "Cloud Nine," "Run Away Child, Running Wild," "Psychedelic Shack," and "Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today)." Three years later the band was back with the ballad "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "Superstar (Remember How You Got Where You Are)," followed by the #1 smash "Papa Was a Rolling Stone."
In 1980 the Temptations hit with "Power," but the comeback was short-lived as a string of personal differences and tragedies befell the group. In 1998, the Temptations returned with Phoenix Rising; that same year, their story was also the subject of a well-received NBC television mini-series. Ear-Resistable followed in the spring of 2000 and went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance the following year.
The Temptations latest release is Still Here, their 49th album which was issued on the eve of their 50th anniversary earlier this year.
One of the greatest soul group of the early '70s, The Spinners earned a loyal following of fans with their breathtaking falsetto, intricate vocal harmonies and detailed web of horns, strings and lightly funky rhythms.
Stevie Wonder's "It's a Shame" gave the group its first hit in 1970. Hitting their peak in the mid '70s, The Spinners spun gold with "I'll Be Around," "Could It Be I'm Fallin' in Love," "Mighty Love,"
"One of a Kind (Love Affair)," "Ghetto Child," "Then Came You," "Games People Play," and "The Rubberband Man."
The late '70s was highlighted by their disco covers of "Working My Way Back to You" and the medley "Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time."
